CSOs identify stigma, poor facilities as barriers to HIV, TB, malaria treatment in Akwa Ibo
Akwa Ibom

Civil society organizations (CSOs) and health workers in Akwa Ibom have reported significant barriers to accessing treatment for HIV, tuberculosis (TB), and malaria. These challenges include stigma, cultural barriers, inadequate facilities, and concerns over confidentiality, which prevent vulnerable residents from utilizing available health services. The issues persist despite the existence of government policies aimed at improving healthcare access in the region.
The CSOs highlighted that the stigma associated with these diseases, particularly HIV, discourages individuals from seeking necessary treatment. Additionally, the poor state of healthcare facilities exacerbates the situation, making it difficult for patients to receive adequate care. Health workers have called for urgent attention to these barriers to improve health outcomes for affected populations in Akwa Ibom.
