Okpebholo to sign convicted kidnappers’ death warrants

Vegetable Market, Benin City, Edo

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, announced on October 23, 2026, that he intends to sign the death warrants of four individuals convicted of kidnapping. This decision follows their sentencing by the state’s Special Court, and the governor stated that he would proceed with the signing if the convicts do not appeal their sentences within 30 days. The case is linked to a kidnapping incident that occurred at the Vegetable Market on Airport Road in Benin City.

The four convicts, identified as Marvellous Isaac among others, were sentenced for their involvement in a kidnapping case that has raised significant security concerns in the region. Governor Okpebholo emphasized his administration's commitment to combating insecurity, a priority he discussed with President Bola Tinubu. The governor's announcement was made during a fellowship at God’s People Worldwide Prayer Ministry, where he highlighted ongoing efforts to address the kidnapping crisis in Edo State.
