Tinubu urges medical college to solve doctor ‘Japa’ syndrome

Abuja, FCT

On October 24, 2026, President Bola Tinubu addressed the West African College of Physicians during their golden jubilee and annual general and scientific meeting held in Abuja, Nigeria. He urged the college to find solutions to the ongoing migration of doctors, commonly referred to as the 'Japa' syndrome, which has been affecting Nigeria and other West African countries.

The Assistant Secretary-General of the college, Hasibu Galadanci, shared this information during a press conference. The meeting highlights the pressing issue of healthcare professionals leaving the region for better opportunities abroad, which poses a significant challenge to the healthcare system in Nigeria. The college is expected to explore strategies to address this migration and retain medical talent within the country.
